How do you generate your timing signals? IndexPilot is a software based mechanical timing system. Each night after the market close we update approximately 50 different data parameters then run the model to see if the signal has changed. The exact criteria we use is proprietary, however, we will say it's based on both fundamental and technical data which we've determined to be very predictive of the future direction of the market. A mechanical system means we're using the same criteria today that we've used throughout the last 17 years. Contrast that to what we call seat-of-the-pants trading, where you're making decisions today based on mood, or constantly changing criteria from the decisions you made a year or 2 ago. Back to Top
What if I can't trade any of the funds you've listed on your strategies page in my 401k plan? The IndexPilot system is not limited to just the funds we've listed. It can be viewed as an overlay of signals which you use to trade the fund or stock of your choice. Keep in mind, if the fund or stock you choose has no correlation to the stock indices, then our signals won't perform well. For example, we wouldn't trade our signals in a precious metals fund, a bond fund, a health care stock fund, an internet stock, a biotech stock etc etc. Most 401K plans offer either an index fund such as the Vanguard Index 500 fund or a fund which is highly correlated to the market's movement such as the Fidelity Magellan. If you have questions, please send an email to support@indexpilot.com with the symbol for the fund you're considering. We'll run a backtest of our signals against the fund or stock you're considering, then send you a summary of the historical performance to determine suitability. Back to Top
I just subscribed and it looks like the current signal has been in effect for several weeks. What should I do? You have several options on how to act upon this signal:
1.) You can simply enter the market either long or short based on the current signal.
2.) You can look at how that current signal has performed since the date recommended. In other words, if you can enter the market at a better price then the date we issued the signal, then by all means do so. If the market has moved favorably for us since the signal was issued, then you may want to wait for a better entry.
3.) You can simply wait for the next signal. On average we trade approximately 20 times a year so normally you won't have to wait more than a few weeks. Back to Top
All your results are based on next day closing prices. If trading the QQQQ's or SPY's, will I do better if I enter at the next mornings open? The short answer is no. Since our signals are attempting to anticipate market turns ahead of time, it will perform better by entering at the next day's close. Performance will show a slight degradation by entering at the next day's open, however the effect is minimal. So, our recommendation if trading the QQQQ's or SPY's, is to enter at the next days close. However, if you find it more convenient to enter at the open, then do so, while realizing your performance may be slightly less over time. If trading a mutual fund, of course you'll automatically enter at the next days closing NAV since that's when all mutual fund orders are filled. Back to Top
Rydex and ProFunds offer leveraged funds for both long and short with a beta of 2 times the market. Can I trade your strategy with these funds? The short answer is yes. We personally don't take advantage of leverage since the returns of the system have been phenomenal without it. The other reason is both the funds you mentioned suffer an erosion of return over time due to the time decay of the derivatives they trade. In other words, a fund such as the Rydex Dynamic S&P 500 Fund, which is a 2 beta, is targeted to perform 2 times the market. What we've found in reality is while the fund may reach its target beta when the market is moving in its favor, they tend to underperform their target beta when the market moves against it. Indeed, these funds look very attractive with a system such as IndexPilot, however, we don't feel compelled to incur the added risk. Back to Top
